Taunton, Somerset -travel information and accommodation

The historic County Town of Taunton is situated on the River Tone, in the heart of the West Country. Famous for its cider, quaint cottages and scenic views, Taunton is an excellent central point for visiting the picturesque countryside of the Quantocks and the Blackdown and Brendon Hills. Whilst the Somerset Levels to the west are associated with the legend of King Arthur and are home to numerous species of birds and wildfowl.

Taunton itself dates back as far as Saxon times and in 1685 it was the site of the bloody Monmouth Rebellion. Today it enjoys a calmer way of life and is best known for its annual Taunton Flower Show, held at Vivary Park every August. Its vibrant and imaginative floral displays have lead to the event being affectionately termed ‘The Chelsea of The West’.

The town’s skyline is proudly dominated by the ornately, decorated tower of the parish church of, St Mary Magdalene. Standing at 163 feet it’s the tallest tower in Somerset and has been described by some as ‘the finest tower in England.’
